St. Ignatius College Prep makes frequent use of Holy Family Church for special events, devotions and liturgies. One of the regularly scheduled events is a well- attended optional Mass every First Friday morning at 7:15 a.m. during the academic year. Most of the school’s 1,400 students, many faculty and often alumni, parents and former parents of St. Ignatius students participate in this Mass.
Rev. Michael Caruso, President of St. Ignatius College Prep, concelebrated the First Friday Mass at Holy Family on April 5. Fr. Caruso’s homily focused on the Church’s long standing pious devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the custom of receiving Holy Communion on the First Friday for nine consecutive months, a practice by some Catholics world-wide.
Fr. Caruso explaine
d that a 17
th century French nun, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, had visions of Jesus who asked the Church to honor his Most Sacred Heart and to receive Communion on First Fridays for nine consecutive months. In return, Christ made 12 promises to the faithful who commemorate First Fridays and will grant them extra graces at the time of their own death.
St. Ignatius students take an active role in organizing and planning the First Friday Masses at Holy Family to which all are invited to attend.
